Among the Luba, the thumb-piano is called kisanjis.  The female carved head is one of the most common motifs in Luba art and is representation of her status, as the Luba trace descent from the female line.  Luba people use their kisanjis to play tunes that recall the past and praise the king. Praise songs are also sung to encourage bravery, express joy, and lead ceremonies to honor the dead.  This kisanji has a broad U-shape iron bridge.
