An anthropomorphic slit drum carved in the style of the Kwele people of Gabon.  The head features a heart-shaped outer edge (possibly horns) with a smaller face consisting of eye slights and painted with white kaolin paint.  This slit drum represents the spirit world and was used by the Bwete association, which maintains social order and promotes well-being and community. The resonating body is a standing female with hands on both breasts. Red cloth with cowrie shells adorn the neck and serve as a skirt at the bottom of the resonator.  The elongated hollowed resonator has an “H” opening, allowing for changes in pitch.  The original beater (stick) is also seen.
