Democratic Republic of Congo

Songye

Wood, metal, fiber, paint, cloth
Early 20th century
Length: 42 inches
Idiophone – Struck Directly  – Slit Drum

This impressive male fetish figural slit drum ‘nkishi’ originates from the Songye, in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ‘Nkisi’ plays the role of mediator between gods and men.  This large specimen is the collective property of an entire village, while smaller figures belong to an individual or family.  In the 16th century, the Songyes migrated from the Shaba region to settle on the left bank of the Lualaba.  Their society is organized in a patriarchal way. Their history is inseparable from that of the Luba to whom they are related though common ancestors. This impressive figural slit drum is used during secret ceremonies. The top of the head is incised and painted with both red and blue paint.  At the very top is a pouch of magical fetish material called ‘boanga’ and a bell is hung from the chin.  The resonator body is open on one side and both sides are incised with geometric designs and painted. Extravagant feet protrude from the short bent legs. Underneath the resonator body (slit drum) are various loincloth materials.  Attached to a rope that is hung from the neck is the original mallet with a head finial on one end.
