The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment and the national dress of Japan. It is a T-shaped, wrapped-front garment with square sleeves and a rectangular body. This kimono is from the fabric known as tanmono. It is silk with elaborate embroidery on a red field. Types of kimono worn can vary based on the wearer’s age, the formality of occasion and – less commonly – the wearer’s marital status. While in modern Japan, the kimono is uncommonly worn as everyday dress, it is still seen at summer festivals and formal events, such as funerals and weddings. This elaborate embroidery kimono comes from the estate of St. Louis’ interior designer, Jack Brandt.
