Buescher 'True Tone' Double Bell Baritone Horn

Elkhart, Indiana
United States

Gold Plated
Patented: Oct. 29, 1926
ca. 1930s
Wind Instruments – Brasswinds – Baritones/Euphoniums

A four valve, double bell gold plated baritone with bells front in Bb.   Based on the baritone horn, this double bell baritone has a second bell that emulates the sound of a trombone.   By pressing the fourth valve, air is looped through the smaller bell, sounding and playing the range of the trombone.  This was of particular interest for small town bands following World War I, who did not have a trombone player and needed someone to double or play the trombone part, without having to learn slide positions on a new instrument.

The Buescher Band Instrument Company was a manufacturer of musical instruments in Elkhart, Indiana, from 1894 to 1963. The company was acquired by the H&A Selmer Company in 1963. Selmer retired the Buescher brand in 1983.

This Buescher double-bell “True Tone” gold plated baritone was donated by Dennis and Jan Gerfen of Nottelmann Music Company.
