This is a Hermann Wrede ‘E-flat’ sopranino or piccolo clarinet with 5-square brass keys, made of boxwood with an original ebony mouthpiece. The springs are attached to keys mounted in blocks. “The New Langwill Index” lists Hermann Wrede as “Music Instrument Maker” beginning in 1811. This 5-keyed sopranino or piccolo clarinet with markings of address, name, and the unicorn logo, indicates that it was made between 1843-1845, when Wrede was located at 35 LR. White Cross Street, Cripplegate, London.
