Engraved on bell: G. ESCHENBACH / BERLIN
A rotary valve cornet by Gustav Eschenbach (1843-1927) of Berlin. The design is somewhat different when compared to rotary valve cornets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cornet, derived from the posthorn (conical bore) with the addition of rotary valves, first appeared in the 1820s in France. This cornet by Gustav Eschenbach, is most likely made in the late 19th century. According to “The New Langwill Index”, Gustav Eschanbach worked in 1870 for J.F. Glass in Berlin, then established his own workshop in 1877. He was awarded contracts to supply the postal authorities (with post horns) and in 1890 the Army. He also received a patent in 1901 for a cornet conical mouthpiece. From 1908-12 he worked with GNADIG, later with SUCHY, on a new slide trumpet.
