A Kiwai Island/Torres Straits drum of the Western Province; Papua New Guinea. It is a classic kundu drum in elongated waisted form with the handle carved from the same piece of timber as the body of the drum. It has an even symmetrical shape and is decorated at the base with carved diamond and triangular patterns. These carvings are repeated around the handle boss.
Presently, these drums are used by most Torres Strait Islander dance groups both on the Australian mainland and on the islands. Drums of this type, now used throughout the Torres Strait, usually originate from the villages located in the well-wooded inland region at the headwaters of the Pahoturi, Binaturi and Oriomo rivers. Possibly this drum was made in the Straits or The Southern Mouth of the Fly and traded into Kiwai. It was field collected on Kiwai Island in 1981.
