Maasai

The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic/language group that is related to the Dinka, Turkana and Kalenjin. Most Maasai people speak the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania, Swahili and English. They inhabit northern, central, and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The Maasai are known for their beautiful beadwork. Young men often cover their bodies in ocher (mixture of clay and sand creating a light brownish-yellow color) to enhance their appearance. Cattle are central to the Maasai economy and are their form of currency and a sign of wealth.  They are well known internationally due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress.
