Ngbaka

The Ngbaka are located in northern Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire).  They migrated from the area around Lake Chad to the north with Manja and Gbaya peoples. Their most common form of sculpture centers around representations of the tribal gods called Seto and Nabo.  Often these sculptures display a heavy ridge of scars that bisect the forehead vertically.

The Ngbaka are primarily subsistence farmers who raise manioc and maize, along with sorghum and bananas.  They are patrilineal people and polygamy is widely practiced. Divination has the power to reveal the causes of misfortune, is an essential part of Ngbaka society.
