Wagogo (Gogo)

The Wagogo (Mgogo/Gogo singular) are a Bantu ethnic and linguistic group based in the Dodoma Region of central Tanzania. Historically, they have been predominantly pastoralist and patrilineal (descent and inheritance through the male), but many contemporary Wagogo now practice settled agriculture, have migrated to urban areas, or work on plantations throughout Tanzania.

Approximately 75% are Muslim, but some still retain their traditional beliefs. In 1962, the Tanzanian government abolished all chiefships and gathered the Wagogo people into cooperative villages in the early 1970s. The Wagogo are known and recognized for their musical skills and talent.
