Idiophone – Struck Directly – Wooden Bell
A Bakongo (Kongo, Bashikongo, Kakongo) wooden bell from the people of Angola & Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Bakongo people number about three million. They occupy the region at the mouth of the Zaire River. There are numerous subgroups, each producing a diversity of artistic styles, with Bakongo art being one of the best known. The human figure is used by the peoples of the Lower Congo in the decoration of almost every work, from ceremonial objects and domestic utensils to pieces of furniture and architectural ornament. This double bell musical instrument when shaken, produces rhythmic sounds with the two inserted wooden clappers attached in the hallowed body of the bell. On both sides of this bell are carved the images of a turtle, a hero of mythological origin.
