Bamileke Beaded Textile Elephant Headdress
A striking, beaded-tufted, cloth headdress emulating an elephant. Headdresses such as this were made in the Cameroon Grasslands, principally around Bandjoun and were the prerogative of the Kuosi Society of the Bamileke people. These beaded elephant headdresses were performed during funerals and public ceremonies to ensure prosperity. Formerly a society of warriors, the Kuosi association now functions as a voluntary initiatory organization based on the wealth and status of its members. During performances, luxurious materials and royal symbols such as beaded vests with broad belts and leopard pelts are worn by the Kuosi dances, revealing their affluence and high status.
