Idiophone – Struck Directly – Gong Beater
This rare bronze figurative gong beater comes from the Baule people, who are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. Historically, the Baule people migrated from Ghana.
Ivory Coast diviners called “Komien” use mallets called “lawle” (also known as “lawre waka” or “lawle”) when striking a flat, flanged iron gong/bell as they enter a trance/meditative state. Most lawles are made of wood, making this a very rare find.
