Although the bombo (bombo criollo) originated in Argentina (called ‘Bombo legüero’) and was derived from the European bass drum, it has become a popular instrument in Andean and Peruvian music.  This Andean bass drum called bombo was collected in Bolivia.  It has the fur of the animal hide still on both drumheads giving it a very deep and unique sound.  Unlike the wancara, the height of the bombo drum is greater than the diameter.  It is played in many folkloric styles with a mallet and a stick that often strike the drumhead and rim in alteration.  It is tuned by tightening the drumheads with the parallel strings looped through the leather thongs.
