A Han Chinese suspended brass gong called a luo (a generic term for gong) on original bamboo stand with mallet. The luo is found in a variety of sizes and this one is the daluo (‘large gong’) in comparison to the xiaoluo (‘small gong’). The daluo is a popular percussion instrument creating a stately and imposing atmosphere in Beijing opera. The luo unlike the cymbal (“bo”), is tuned and is characterized by a quick rise in pitch after it is struck.
