Aerophone – Wind Instruments Proper – Reed Vibrators/Reedpipes

A Chinese double-reed instrument called suona (also called laba or haidi).  It consists of a tubular conical wooden body with a metal bocal and a detachable metal bell at the end.  These first appeared during the late Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 A.D.), having originated in the Middle East. The term suona derives from zurna, the Arabic name for the instrument.  The penetrating sound of the suona is ideal for festivals, weddings, funeral processions and military functions. It also serves as an important folk instrument of northern China and is commonly used in local theaters to accompany singing and dancing, in addition to being played in popular music. The player completely covers the double reeds and uses circular breathing to maintain a constant tone.
