This Albert system clarinet, derived in the early 19th century, refers to a system of clarinet keywork and fingering developed by Eugène Albert. In 1825 The French instrument maker Denis Buffet Auger sets up his workshop in the heart of Paris and began producing 13-key clarinets. The famous Buffet Crampon was created in 1836, when Jean-Louis Buffet, Denis’ son, marries Zoe Crampon. The logo used on this clarinet and still today was created in 1844.
In the United Kingdom the Albert system is known as the simple system and has been largely replaced by the Boehm system and Oehler system. Nevertheless, the Albert system is still used, mainly by clarinetists who perform Greek, Belarussian, Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish folk music, Klezmer, and Dixieland styles, due to the ease of slurring notes provided by unkeyed tone holes.
