This Albert System Eb Sopranino boxwood clarinet with an ivory bell ring and connecting ferrules is marked by the French makers Martin Freres. The Albert system refers to a system of clarinet key work and fingering developed by Eugène Albert. In the United Kingdom, it is known as the ‘simple system.’ It has been largely replaced by the Boehm system and Oehler system. However, some Big Band musicians and Jazz players still use a clarinet outfitted with the Albert system.
The Martin Freres Societe (fr., Martin Brothers Company), was established in the year 1840 in the city of La Couture Boussey-Erue France by (Francois) Jean-Baptiste (1817-1877), Claude Eugene (1819-1874) and Felix (1821 – 1896) MARTIN (surname). These high-quality craftsmen hand-manufactured flutes and clarinets from 1840 until their deaths. In the late 1890s, the logo changed when the Thibouville Family of Paris partnered with the Jean-Baptiste Martin Family to continue the Martin Freres tradition through 1927. The vintage 13 salt-spoon shaped keys (no ring keys) are mounted on posts and the clarinet consists of four sections plus the ebony mouthpiece. This clarinet possibly dates between @ 1870s -1890s C.E.
