Double Reed
A double-reed instrument is a woodwind instrument that features two pieces of cane vibrating against each other. The two reeds (usually Arundo donax cane) are fastened together with an opening at the tip, and at the opposite end are fastened to a metal tube (staple), that is normally surrounded at one end by a piece of cork. There is a great deal of variations in reed making including width, depth, length, etc. Some reeds today are made of synthetic materials. A variety of instruments use the double reed including instruments were the reed is fully exposed, those instruments that are partially enclosed by a pirouette, and those instruments that are fully enclosed in a wind cap.
