A unique 7-keyed ‘C’ flute marked E. T. Depose, a trade name for woodwind instruments made by Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy & Cie. abbreviated “J.T.L.” This musical instrument making company, began forming in the mid-19th century from the merger of pre-existing makers who were based in France. The company was fully established with Jerome Thibouville as the sole proprietor of the firm in 1867. At that time, musical instrument factories included brass instruments in Grenelle, woodwind instruments in La Couture, and strings in Mirecourt, employing more than 1,000 workers.
Jérôme Thibouville was a descendant of a line of woodwind and brass instrument makers dating back to the 16th century. Nevertheless, as an entrepreneur, he saw the value in developing a business that included string instruments, although he was not himself a luthier or bow-maker. The company also made large numbers of mechanical organs and organettes between 1880 and 1910. Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy & Cie. was closed in 1969.
