Wind Instruments – Woodwinds – Flutes
A Romanian diatonic pan flute called the nai, with 27 pipes. These panpipe flutes have been used since the 17th century. The wooden pipes are arranged in a curved array, making it easier to move from one pipe to the other. The longer pipes with a slightly larger diameter are lower in pitch and on the left. The pitch of each pipe is adjusted with beeswax. They were most commonly played by the naingiu (nai /panpipe flute player), and members of a professional clan of Romani musicians, including the lăutari (lute player), the cobzar (cobza player), and the scripcar (scripcă or fiddle player) in bands call taraf.
