The Java, Indonesian celempung is a wooden zither played in the Javanese gamelan ensemble. It is also known to have a connection with the harp in Sundanese gamelan. This celempung has 26 strings tuned in pairs with one string set tuned to pelog pitches (seven equally flexible pitches in an octave) and the other string set tuned to slendro pitches (five equidistant but flexible (or varying) pitches of the same octave). The celempung has a length of about 90 cms and sounds an octave lower than the Java box shaped zither known as a siter. Both the celempung and siter play together the cengkok, a melodic pattern based on the balungan (melodic outline).
This celempung has an attractive decorated wood body with a gold painted carved skirt under carriage and carved crest at the top. It is supported on legs that terminate into hoof feet.
