A Kuba Shoowa / Shobwa people single-headed waisted drum (dumbbell-shaped) from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is hand carved from a single log with two arching effigy side handles. The surface of the drum is embellished with intricate interlocking geometric patterns and repetitions that are similar to woven textile patterns. The skin is attached using a strip of leather placed around the top of the body and nailed to it. The skin is then stitched to the leather stip. This type of drum was employed only in rare circumstances, such as the investiture of nobles.
