Idiophone – Struck Directly – Slit Drum
This Kwele slit drum figure shows the traditional heart-shaped Ekuk Antelope mask-type head, with a hairdo from several colored chicken quills. The face consists of eye slights and is painted with white kaolin paint, representative of the spirit world. In studying the sculpture of this instrument, ritual reenactment is clearly defined by the pose and gesture of the icon. Gesture refers to the motions of the body and limbs, communicating thought. A sculpture with hands on abdomen or heart (the two central organs of the body), is seeking aid in matters of health, wealth, or internal goodness. Attitude is defined by the pose of the body icon. This Kwele slit gong figure is shown kneeling, an icon of service or submission, making an appeal to a higher force. It is also an symbol of respect, a test of endurance and above all a pledge to the way of the ancestors.
