A caryatid work of tribal art from the Luba people of the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.  The drum resonator is supported by a kneeling female figure, symbolizing the continuity of the matrilineal power societies. Four faces are carved into the body of the drum resonator.  Drums are among the most important forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in the ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story telling and communication of messages.
