Idiophone – Struck Directly – Slit Drum

This is a Mangbetu slit drum called nedungu. Slit drums like this would have been the center piece of the Mangbetu chiefs’ orchestras.  It has a hollow chamber with a long narrow opening that resonates when struck. The case of the resonator is in the shape of a half-moon, slightly convex. The slit drum is decorated with copper alloy studs forming three schematic human forms on each side. The beauty of its abstract form also makes this instrument a sculpture. These drums were played in the chief’s orchestra, which may include xylophones, gongs and rattles. They were used at the time of festivities or ritual ceremonies.  They were also used in communicating with their comrades during military expeditions. When played, the nedungu is hung on a strap around the musician’s shoulder and braced against the right knee so that the slit points forward. The nedungu is beaten on both sides with padded drumsticks.
