This gong is made by the Nkutshu people for the Nkumi society of the Congo. Like many pieces of traditional African metalwork, this gong served multiple purposes in the tribe. For the Nkumi society these gongs were used as a symbol of brotherhood. Chosen for their wisdon, Nkumi members served as tutors to the eldest songs of reigning Teltela and Nkutshu families. They were also responsible for judicial matters. Outside of their ceremonial or ritual purposes, metal objects including instruments made from metal were a mark of wealth and power. This gong shows repousse dotted design on both sides.
