This tinya or kirki (Quechua language) is a small shallow cylindrical double-headed drum of wood and leather that is used in the traditional music of the Andean region from Argentina to Columbia, and particularly in Peru. A single musician plays the tinya with a stick in one hand, while playing the pipo or antaras (single pipe flute) with the other hand. This combination of instrument playing by one musician is used to accompany tinya palla (an Andean ladies’ dance). These instruments developed before the colonization of Peru. The tinya is also used to accompany the wak’rapuku’ (found in this collection), at ritual festivals associated with branding stock/cattle.
