A Senufo masquerade drum from the regions of the Ivory Coast, between southeast Mali and southern Burkino Faso. Drums serve many functions in the Senufo culture. They are a piece of cultural sculpture used for ceremonial purposes or can be used to accompany social events, story-telling, dance, and communicate messages. This drum is comprised of a single hollowed wooden shell covered with two pieces of animal hide on both open ends. Both drum head hides are laced together with leather strips while the ends of the hides are held down by leather ropes encircling the shell of the drum. A handle comprised of cloth, rope and leather are attached for carrying and holding while playing.
