A field collected and well used Senufo drum called “Pliéwo,” from the Ivory Coast. Drums serve both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture that is significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, storytelling and communication of messages. This drum is embellished with a low relief animal (lizard) engraving and angular incising. It exhibits a subtle surface elegance and well designed form with a wonderful dark patina. The hide top is in good condition. The drum is classified as a footed drum with four legs, each bent like knees under a circular flared wooden skirt, supporting the wooden resonator above.
