This upright serpent Forveille, that takes its name from its inventor. It has a wooden bell with a small brass bell ring. The swan-shaped bocal/pipe crook and first tenor section with a screw-on water key, are brass. It has a brass mouthpiece and music holder (lyre), which is attached to the bell. The wooden butt joint is J-shaped. There are four brass keys and six finger holes.
Jean Andre Forveille was a French wind instrument maker who designed the serpent into upright form in 1823. It was then submitted to the Paris Exhibition of 1823, where it gained an honorable mention status.
