Rebana is a generic name for frame and conical drums in Malaysia and Indonesia.  This rebana consists of a frame drum with sides that slop inward and has a tacked-on goatskin head with red cloth trimming.  This type of rebana is called terbang in Java,  while in some areas of Sumatra frame drums are called rapa’i, and in Malaysia they are called kompang.  The terbang is used in Islamic devotional music such as the zikir, in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Singapore.  The name rebana came from the Arabic word robbana (“our Lord”).  It is also used by the Cham people of Cambodia and gave rise to the rabana which is used by the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka.
