Nyanga pan pipes are traditional bamboo or reed instruments from the Nyungwe people of Mozambique.  They are primarily used in or connected in the region around Tete district on the Zambezi River in Mozambique, where they are associated with specific dances and cultural gatherings and where this was field collected.

All the panpipes are known generically as ‘nyanga, but each sound different from any other, based on how it is made and the number, size, and length of the pipes.  This ‘nyanga’ from the Nyungwe people has a patinated finish and features 16 tied pipes/tubes of varying lengths.  Musicians often perform in large groups, combining intricate, rhythmic dance, and singing with the playing of the pipes.
