Gongs like this have an important place in West Africa. They are objects which were once used as currency and which have many ritual functions. The handle of this gong is carved with a stylized Bamum chief head, the cheeks puffed out, mouth is formed as if he is speaking, and wearing a tall headdress (symbol for life well-lived). This is an old item, the metal is encrusted with a fine patina. Attached handle still makes a fine “clonk” when the gong is struck.
