This traditional Luba “kifwebe” whistle is used by the secret society of the same name that originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The flute consists of wood and shows a wonderful smooth aged surface patina. Both sides of the flute depict in low relief, “kifwebe” mask-like carvings of supernatural beings. The Luba “kifwebe” mask is used in certain royal ceremonies and can also be worn on the night of the new moon, when the villagers dance to honor their ancestors.
