A rare Mambila slit drum from Cameroon.  The “H” shape opening in the hallowed resonator log allows variations of pitch to be achieved.  The finial head of the drum represents an ancestral spirit with the heart-shaped face painted with kaolin paint.  Wooden pegs are inserted into the crest of the head. Mambila figures called tadep embody ancestors who, according to their beliefs, are responsible for the clan’s wealth. The tadep figures were used in healing rites and to deter thieves.
