Side-blown ivory horns/trumpets signify a symbol of power and still retain an important position in the royal regalia in Africa today. This Mangbetu ivory horn with two metal strap holders reveals motifs of royalty, such as the canoe-shaped design, deep relief carving of ridges, and a projecting mouthpiece at the right of the center of the horn. Skilled carvers may take over two months to reform the tusk and make it playable. These horn/trumpets are played in groups/ensembles of horns (hocket effect) to accompany dances or signal the entrance and departure of the king. This trumpet plays well and shows a nice patina.
