Mexico, Mesoamerica
Veracruz ‘Nopiloa’ Culture

Ceramic, kaolin
ca. 600 – 900 C.E.
Height: 6.5 in, Width: 3.5 in
Idiophones – Indirectly Struck – Rattles

A figural ceramic rattle from the Veracruz ‘Nopiloa’ tradition that is related to the Mayan figurine tradition.   This figure depicts a woman that is mold-made and features a very fine, white kaolin slip. It once had articulated limbs (lost in antiquity, which is typical for these examples), and retains ceramic rattle balls inside.

Figures such as these were typically grave offering goods and the rattle may have been used ceremonially, perhaps to audibly guide/encourage the deceased as they began their journey through the Underworld. She features fine detailing showing large ear spools, a necklace and pendant, an elaborate headdress, as well as ornate patterning on her garments.

Veracruz is officially the Free and Sovereign State of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave   It is one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. Located in eastern Mexico, sharing the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz is bordered by seven states and is divided into 212 municipalities, with its capital city Xalapa-Enríquez.
