Southwest
In the Southwest, we find the Pueblo Nations. They were discovered by members of the Coronado expedition who was searching for Seven Cities of Abolo in 1540. These Native Americans fought against the Spaniards until 1694, when they were conquered.
Present day Pueblo Nation include: Hopi, Zuni, and Taos. They are farmers and herders, whose traditions reach back to the Anasazi tradition. The Pueblos today are further divided into clans: Turquoise Clan, Corn Clan, Turkey Clan, etc. At first the Pueblo Nation lived in caves. The Hopi (their name means ‘People of Peace’) fled to cliffs and caves to escape the ravage of wilder tribes. They isolated themselves and have clung to their traditions and customs with dignity and reserve. Eventually they learned to build huts and finally apartment buildings – the massive adobes.
