Nuna

Wood
Early-Mid 20th Century
Length: 12 inches
Aerophone – Edge-blown – Flute/Whistle

The Nuna people, located in Southern Burkina Faso, belong to the larger population group of the Gurunsi and are comprised mainly of farmers. They are well known for their dramatic carved masks, honoring the spirit of the hawk. Traditional Mask Dances are held throughout the year on market day, during initiations, and at funerals to honor the spirits and evoke their blessings. This Nuna Flute strikes a close resemblance to a hawk, with stylized fanned tail feathers at the end, reaching wings at the top, and geometrical carved patterns, a symbolic representation of the Nuna people.
