Very interesting and beautifully hand carved drum with numerous lizards and geometric designs, retaining its original lizard skin drumhead. This drum was collected in the Lake Sentani region and possibly made by an Asmat artisan. Lake Sentani is near Jayapura Regency in the Indonesian province of Papua. It is located just to the south of the town of Sentani, at the northeast extremity. Papua (formerly called Irian Jaya, but now undergoing further administrative partitioning) consists of many ethnic groups of Indonesia including artisans of the Asmat, originally of New Guinea.
