Hamiet Bluiett (1940-2018), one of the world’s great and most prominent baritone saxophonists in jazz went to Brooklyn High School in Brooklin, Illinois where he was a student of bandleader George Hudson (1910-1996). His aunt, a choral director, had taught music to Bluiett as a child and at the age of nine he started playing the clarinet. Bluiett attended Southern Illinois University at both Edwardsville and Carbondale and began playing baritone sax and flute. While serving in the U.S. Navy, Bluiett would return home periodically to play at the Blue Note Club on the east side, owned by the late Leo Gooden. In 1960 he recorded with the Blue Note Club group “Spider Burks Present Leo’s Five” for L. G. Records
In the mid-60’s he played with musicians such as Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, and Floyd LaFlora, who later formed the Black Artist Group (BAG). Then, Bluiett moved to New York and joined the Sam Rivers ensemble beginning in 1969. In 1972, after some freelancing, he joined and toured with the late composer and bassist, Charles Mingus, until 1975. In 1976, Bluiett was involved with the “loft jazz” scene in New York, where some of the avant-garde jazz musicians who were having trouble securing work took matters into their own hands and opened their own little clubs. The following year, Bluiett, along with Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill and David Murry co-founded the internationally acclaimed World Saxophone Quartet, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with an album of Jimi Hendrix pieces for Justin Time Records.
Bluiett continued to record for Black Saint/Soul Note and other labels, as seen here, “Hamiet Bluiett ‘RESOLUTION’ with Don Pullen, Fred Hopkins, Billy Hart and Don Moye.”
