The thammattama drum has two main parts. Much like the India tablas, the right side (first part) produces high pitched sounds, and the left side (second part) produces the low pitched sounds. These drums are made from the wood of Ehela, Jaak, and Kohomba trees and are played using two circular bound sticks, each made of Kaduru. These traditional drums are played in processions, cultural, and religious occasions such as Buddhist temple services. The thammattama may also be a companion drum to the barrel shaped dawula drum used in the Hewisi Ensemble.
