This Yaka (Bayaka) wooden flute/whistle is fashioned after the “Ndemba” initiation style mask with its upturned nose.  It does not depict ancestors or spirits, but is considered to be a charm for the male initiates. These flutes are usually burned after the initiation, but are sometimes sold. Skilled carving possibly for art market.  According to Arthur P. Bourgeois  these whistles are also called ‘yimbila’ and serve as a ritual charm, used for hunting.  They are worn as a pendant and used by the chief during collective hunts, in order to alert his team or his dog to direct them towards the prey.  The pitch is altered by the lateral appendages.
