Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire)
Zande
Antelope horn
ca. Mid-20th century
Length: 18 inches
Aerophone – Lip Vibrated – Horn
A Zande side-blown horn/trumpet showing usage and age, with a rectangle-shaped blow-hole close to the top for buzzing the lips. The Zande population is spread over three countries, namely South Sudan, the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in southeastern Central African Republic. Their art is not a court art, but is linked primarily to a religious cult called Mani. Through magical means, the rituals of the Mani Society helps to balance out the power of the ruling family and protect its non-aristocratic members from harm.
