The Luba people or Baluba are an ethno-linguistic group indigenous to the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  This Luba ngoma is carved from one piece of wood and comes from the Kabongo, who have developed artistic skills to a high degree.  The drum head consists of reptile skin, secured by a leather band.   Incised geometric design surrounds the drum with one face protruding next to an intentional hole in the side of the drum.  Drums were played at both social events and for the Luba court at the investiture or funeral of the ruler or a dignitary.  This drum is goblet-shaped and shows much usage and age.
