Timor-Leste ‘Ceremonial Drum' (A)

Mid 20th century
Height: 18 inches
Membranophones – Struck Membranophones

This pedestal drum is played by the Timorese men of East Timor during tebedai dance in honor of their ancestors.  Dr. Goodwin described it as: ‘A rosewood male ceremonial drum.’   It is a single headed wooden drum carved from one piece of wood, that is played with two wooden mallets. The bottom of the bowl-shaped resonator extends to a circular neck and expanded foot. The skin head is attached with wooden pegs.  Extensive carving and elaborate incised geometric designs  decorate the resonator body, neck, and foot.  This ceremonial drum is played in ensemble with the Timor tala (gong).

The Timor-Leste traditional music is unique in this fragile culture. As well as dance and singing there are only a few authentic instruments that are still in existence in many of the 13 districts. Nevertheless, much of the traditional music and languages have vanished.
